GET THE BRAZILIAN JIU JITSU ADVANTAGE
Often referred to as “BJJ”, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu stresses constant live free-form practice of leg locks, arm locks, pins & choke techniques against a resisting opponent.
Jiu Jitsu is a combat tested self defense system based on real-world encounters to put the emphasis on techniques that actually work against aggressive attackers. With practical and quickly learned techniques that conclusively stop physical attacks, Jiu Jitsu utilizes advanced principles of leverage and situational ground control. This allows a smaller person to defend against an attack by a larger & stronger opponent.
Jiu Jitsu has dominated martial arts since the the famous “Gracie Challenge” in the 1920’s. This highly-evolved Martial Art is safe & fun to practice, and extremely effective in self defense situations, and is now available in Boise, Idaho.

I loved the small gyms because of the family feel and how everyone looks out for each other. I was a little hesitant switching to GB back in Scottsdale, but as soon as I did I knew I made the right decision. GB Boise is no different. Everyone there gets along great and it shows by how many families we have training there.Professor Ray has such great attention to detail, it makes learning a challenging sport that much more easier. Having trained with some world class instructors, he's in the conversation for best I've ever had.I wouldn't hesitate to refer any of my family or friends there! read less

When I walked through the door at Gracie Barra the first time I had no idea what it would be like. Stereotypes of "cage fighting tough guys" went through my mind and I was looking for anything BUT that. I simply wanted to try something new, learn something useful, and get in better shape with a lifetime sport.Rian, the general manager, was extremely nice and showed me around. There was absolutely no pressure at all. He explained the classes and the business and let me borrow a gi (the robe thing) to try my first class. I was blown away. Not only did an hour fly by, but I was huffin-and-puffin and actually ENJOYING my workout. It was the most I had exercised in close to a year. It was so fun to learn a skillset and to actually begin something that I could progress in over time. The lead instructor, Professor Ray, has been amazing. I signed up after my first class and have been going for 2 months solid now. Professor Ray is VERY professional and I am extremely knowledgeable. It is one thing to be a good practitioner of jiu jitsu, (Professor Ray is a black belt), but it is something completely different to be a great teacher. Ray is an awesome instructor and he breaks things down in an easily understandable way. It doesn't matter if it's your first class or your 100th, I guarantee you'll learn something new. The other coaches at Gracie Barra are also excellent mentors and very easily approachable. Asking questions is encouraged and they truly want you to learn, that's a really important value-add for me.As for the other guys and gals in the class: everyone has been so dang nice. I instantly felt welcomed by the other folks and have had a great time getting to know everyone at the school. After coming regularly for a few weeks, I realized I began to see the "usual suspects" in class. It's been great to meet new people who are also genuinely concerned about helping me as well. My bond with them has grown right alongside my knowledge base of jiu jitsu. When we break off to work on individual skills, my training partners have been helpful and offered tips and advice with the sole intent to help me get better. I'm really appreciative of their welcoming nature, their desire to help me get better, and their warm, welcoming attitudes that make working out and learning jiu jitsu FUN.I never imagined I would be involved in martial arts as an adult, especially having no background in wrestling or other martial arts. It has been an amazing experience and super rewarding I've even dropped over 20 pounds in the two months since I joined (grateful for that!). I look forward to any new members who join Gracie Barra and read this review. I know you will have the same awesome experience that I have had and I'm excited for it to potentially impact your life in as positive a way as it has my own. This was exactly what I needed in my life, and I didn't even know it. Best of luck to you on beginning your own jiu jitsu journey! You won't regret it. 🙂 -Logan read less

I came with my three boys, aged 6 to 12 and we felt at home immediately as complete newbies. Professor Ray and Rian run a clean, organized gym with a great atmosphere. My kids love coming and consider the other kids among their best friends. We all just returned from competing in our first IBJJF competition and the support from the GB family was incredible. When they told me Jui-Jitsu will change your life, I was skeptical. Now I'm a believer! read less

The staff do a fantastic job of building a positive environment, and unlike many other gyms, egos are left at the door. There are “gorillas” in the gym, but everyone there (especially the gorillas) work hard to develop effective and fun training while keeping things in a controlled and safe framework. The staff is brilliant and very talented and the students are second to none. read less

I'm relocating to Boise so, naturally, I went looking for a place to learn and practice, as I have retired from owning and managing a full time school of my own. I've decided to attend Ray Morrow's Gracie Barra jiu-Jitsu after attending classes and carefully interviewing the teacher and his team. The school is clean, professionally run, and full of heart, integrity, and what I perceive as a passion for the work. I won't train with people I don't respect --and/or who don't behave as a master teacher should or could. This is my recommendation for anyone who is considering a martial arts school in Boise --and/or those who love to practice this wonderfully complex and engaging art. --Tom Callos read less

All of the coaches there are patient and exude their passion for the discipline. It's been nothing but amazing.
